Some Missouri politicians want to swap the state income tax for a greatly expanded sales tax.
But eliminating the income tax rigs the system for the wealthy, while hurting working people, families, and communities.
► While the wealthiest would get a big tax cut, up to 80% of Missourians would pay more in taxes under this scheme. That's because Missourians would pay expanded sales taxes on the services they use every day, like childcare, haircuts, car repairs, and home maintenance. In fact, a Missourian earning $65,000 would pay over $500 more in tax than they currently do – all to pay for tax cuts for those who already have the most.
► The income tax makes up more than 60% of state GR. It's a critical state funding source for K-12 schools, mental health services, children’s services like childcare and foster care, and services for older adults like meals on wheels and respite care. There’s simply no way to cut the income tax without cutting services Missourians and our communities need to build prosperity.
Our state already faces a $2 billion budget shortfall, and state legislators have discussed cutting critical funds for foster care, services for Missourians with developmental disabilities, and K-12 education.
This tax scheme would further starve our state of the resources needed to invest in the proven building blocks of economic growth, all while shifting more costs onto low-and middle-income Missourians already struggling to get ahead.
Act NOW to tell your state Senator to OPPOSE this tax scheme.
