Congressional leaders are advancing a reckless budget plan that would take health care and food assistance away from millions of people – all to pay for extreme tax cuts for the nation’s wealthiest households and corporations.

Congress is putting together proposals that would slash funding for Medicaid and nutrition assistance, jeopardizing the wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of Missourians.
The U.S. House would cut $880 billion from Medicaid and $230 billion in cuts from nutrition assistance over the next 10 years.
While some elected officials have tried to claim their potential changes won't affect people or services, there’s simply no way for Congress to make these extreme cuts without taking away food assistance and drastically cutting Medicaid for everyone, including seniors in nursing homes, low-income children and parents, and people with disabilities.
The House is working quickly on details of their proposed Medicaid and SNAP cuts, and may finalize a proposal as soon as next week.

Medicaid/MO HealthNet

In Missouri, Medicaid covers:

Nearly two in five children, nearly half of the children living in rural Missouri and 38% of births.
One in eight adults aged 19-64, the majority of whom are working in jobs that do not provide access to affordable health insurance.
Nearly 100,000 older adults, 9% of Missouri seniors and 2/3 of nursing home care.
More than 120,000 adults under the age of 65 with a disability.

Medicaid is critical to the health and wellbeing of Missourians, and is key to our state’s health care infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.

SNAP

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps over 324,000 Missouri households (including nearly 275,000 children) pay for food.

Without SNAP, many of these families struggling to make ends meet would not get the nutrition they need.

SNAP improves health outcomes, and reduces food insecurity and financial hardship.

SNAP also provides a critical boost to local economies throughout Missouri.
