Congressional leaders are rushing a reckless budget plan that would take health care and food assistance away from millions of people – all to pay for extreme tax cuts for the nation’s wealthiest households and corporations.

Despite the rhetoric, there is no way to make these cuts WITHOUT Missourians losing their health insurance or nutrition assistance.

I urge you to oppose the budget resolution expected in the House this week that proposes deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP—programs that are essential to the health and stability of Missouri families, especially in times of economic uncertainty.

Over one million Missourians rely on Medicaid, including almost half of our state’s children, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and low-income seniors. These cuts would reduce access to care, push families into crisis, and put more pressure on already-struggling rural hospitals.

SNAP supports over 650,000 Missourians, helping families afford food and stimulating local economies. In tough times, it’s one of the most effective tools we have to fight hunger and poverty—especially for kids.

Cuts to programs like Medicaid and SNAP WILL result in cuts to benefits. Therefore, we support efforts like Senator Josh Hawley’s, which seek to remove Medicaid cuts from the conversation entirely. Cutting these programs now would only deepen hardship across Missouri and widen existing disparities.

Please stand with Missouri families and reject this harmful resolution and future legislation that does not explicitly protect Medicaid and SNAP benefits for Missourians. Protecting Medicaid and SNAP isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s a smart investment in our communities and Missouri's economy.
